Musically Apart - The System

It states on my blog under the "who am I" that I love music apart from tools and electronics.

From 2001 to 2007 I was an avid radio listener. I did it because my guitar teacher told me that it's good for ear training and finding keys, chords etc. Due to how random the airplay can be, I have to agree but I found that it's hard to improvise over RAP music. Nonetheless Radio is way more cheap than CDs,Black Disc and Cassettes (Do people play cassettes now?). Hehe

I stop listening like I used to since 2008. I guess I was too busy with things in life that I ignored the power button.This is my third HiFi system. It consist of remnants of my 90's system consolidating with 2005/06 Cash Converters hunts. It gets move around in my flat to become a foot stool or put whatever on it. I know myself too well that I would leave it untouched for the next 10 years so I thought I bring it to work. At least I’ll try to keep it tidy for me and my customers’ entertainment. It’s a good conversation starter too.

We can tell from the grime the system haven't consume a jolt for a decade. Before I plug and possibly blow things up. I like to see if there's any foreign illegal settlement inside.

I ends my entry here as there's tremendous amount cleaning ahead. By the way, is radio music still good today? See you in the next report.

Tool Talk - Wrenches.

This entry was meant for another bass repaired. Given the circumstances the writer wish not to bore with similar low notes. Let's talk tool, mine in particular. A poor man show off, a little story and some rants.I love them, I don't know why. Well who doesn't, especially the affordable ones and how essential it is for work.

Sex drivers, socket drivers whatever it is, it's all good stuff to me but never think for a minute that you will complete all of it like a PC game. No sir for you will do it again and again. It's all about stages. For example at stage one, it's buying only the size need for work. Stage II is when you need to add few more just in case. Stage III is when for no reason, you want to complete the Metric and Imperial rainbow from a particular make and model. Stage IV is when you want several rainbows on the shelf while hunting down for used, vintage or discontinued tools, another name for stage IV is also known as a collector/hoarder. Stage IV carriers can impede us bargain hunter from owning used tools that were once expensive when new.

I recently upgraded to stage II. The upgrade was inevitable as it really bothers me when I don't have the appropriate size. By the way I know about those 99 in 1 box interchangeable tool bit type. Yes, they are convenient but to me it is an inconvenient in disguise. I do not envy swapping drive bit because the bit itself isn't that much bigger than a guitar pick, I sure loose them easily. I prefer something that permanent off the factory. It must have its own handle with integrity and accountability. At this age I prefer looking at a colour or embossed/stamped number on the tools than looking at 99 plural bits that look alike with each other. I feel in the long run, I'm well reimburse by such singular tool design. Furthermore I want to be seen by my customer's to be professionally presented and not a cheap skate. lol

My recent pasar road adventure fruited those yellow handles socket wrench before you. I do feel it would've been nicer if it was all from the same make but the different make is actually a convenient in disguise. At least I know what I'm grabbing at first sight. As far as guitars and amp work concern, I believe the collection is complete. From now on, come whatever musical gear you are through my door for I am battle ready to take it apart or to tight it up. As long as it's Metric of course. Hehe.

However I've yet to complete my Imperial socket wrench. These aren't commonly use in this part of the world. It only gets use when I dismantle something from USA, Liberia and Myanmar (imperial standard countries). The only local place I know that sells imperial size socket wrench is Ace Hardware. By the way thank you for opening a few here. I have to confess I had made an unavoidable mistake buying socket wrench one at a time before I realised that the one or two I missed are inside a set on Ace Hardware shelf. Those can’t be sold as loose and its sure is damn expensive to be doing it again now. Well what could I do, at the time, when you need it then you need it.

However I like to point out that some Metric and Imperial can crossover to the oppose territory. For example 7/16 can work on 11mm nuts. 14mm can work 9/16 nuts. I don't condone this but it works.

What about sex drivers? Why not. Those are pretty too. Did you know old Kahler Tremolo uses odd size socket fasteners? Good thing one time I was prepared. I hope the Metric vs Imperial war will end soon. Technology would move at a congruent tangent. No more conversion chart, app and less use of the caliper. Wouldn't it be better?Look below to understand what I mean.

In the rest of the world.

A Kilometer is 1000meters, 1 meter is 100cm, 1cm is 100mm, 1mm is 1000micrometers, 1 micron is 1 atom?. Make sense doesn't it.

Meanwhile in USA, Liberia and Myanmar.

A mile is 8 furlongs, 1 furlong is 220 yards, 1 yard is 3 feet, 1 foot is 12 inch, 1 inch equals to half a thumb? Imagine the Olympics in imperial. Main event sprint final in 109.36 yards and etc.

This and that II

Something different this time, a few weeks ago I thought I make a journey to Pasar Road. The last time I was there was in 2012/13 when I did this entry.

The surrounding had changed a lot years before whereby  across the road once exist a row of old 80s style single story shop lot is now a row of modern shop several floors building. To begin with, I'm not familiar with that side of things so I'm not sure whether the previous shops are still there in the new building or had moved elsewhere.

My favorite row to shop has always been to the left row. It's been a habit of mine to walk along this row first before I check elsewhere.

Most of these shops are family run business. I still recognized their face and most of them has been there since the 90s. Most of the shops are bringing in security cams product.

The speaker repair shop in still there at the back lot. And so is the kari Kambing stall. I came too early so I didn’t wait for the kari kambing. I proceeded to look for replacement tips for my hakko, a spool of black hookup wire while knowing there will be some tiny impulse buy. I was also looking around for cheap analog scope as backup but there are no second hand unit I could find. Either everyone now has gone digital or I looked at the wrong place. If you know any shops in KL or PJ that sells used test instruments, do email me. I'm trying to put up a small electronic lab/bench of my own.

The patrons was average compared to the 90s. Back then it was like queuing for concert. When you walk in to buy something, you have to wait to be attended. It was so crowded that you bound to rub shoulder with the patrons. It's like pasar segar but dry with a nice smell of plastic and semi-conductors

There's a shop I remember well call Maplin. They still sells solder kit project. I saw some interesting power supply projects. I saw a couple of throwback project kit. I remember buliding that FM transmitter in the 90s. Used it few times to prank my neighbour and food stalls that have radio along Jalan Riong (near NST and the old TV3 or STMB building). The way it works is you dial your transmitter to the station they are listening to. Once you in their frequency, it'll be blank sound on their end. You can talk and hear your voice over their radio (if you want to). I did try it with my guitar but didn't pursue it because I knew everyone in the block would know who it is. hehe.

We used to live in a flat in Jalan Bangsar where our kitchen is next to the neighbour bedroom. Our neighbour would have his radio on from midnight to dawn. A few times when he's listening to the radio I used my transmitter to jam it. Whenever he switches station I give him a few seconds then jammed it. This was a time where there were less than 10 station in the FM band hence the puzzling escalated to anger that he started banging his radio thinking it had a loose connection or something. I laugh so hard in our kitchen listening to his rumbling and cursing at the radio set. I did felt a bit guilty depriving a person musical enjoyment.

You see back then there was no mp3 player, mobile phone could only store well..phone numbers of course but not everyone has them, CDs were expensive but purchase-able, Vinyl was thought to be extinct, Cassette Deck will break sooner in guitar players possession so Radio was the peoples number one entertainment. Oh ya VHS too. I think my prank was illegal but then again who listens to radio nowadays? I guess I can't prank anyone anymore now. Hehe.

Another project I built when I started working for music shop in 99 was the metronome. Thought I saved some pretty penny with it but eventually it became useless because it didn't have any speed indicator. The beep felt out of tempo (or was it me?). Gave it to my student. I hope the bloody thing didn't kill his interest/rhythm too. But still, those escol projects are still good for sharpening soldering skill with some feeling of achievement after building something. You'll also have an idea how old thing were painstaking hand soldered before the advent of reflow machines. Who knows, someday I might give those power supply kit a go. Could power up pedals? A power transformer not included of course.

LK Picks, handmade picks from up north.

Elaktuntut - LK Picks bukan nama jenama sebenar. Ia singkatan timangan oleh saya. Saya fikir ia lebih mudah dari membaca "pick buatan tangan oleh satu Abang di Kedah baq hang tu dia noohh". Agak panjang dan tidak menangkap di minda bila dibaca. Pada pembaca dari Kedah diharap jangan ambil peduli kesalahan tatabahasa Kedah saya diatas.

Disclaimer - LK Picks is not the actual brand name. Its a nickname given by this writer to better represent the person crafting the picks.

LK Picks ialah karya kreatif tempatan oleh Encik Lokman Kamal beroperasi secara hobi di Kedah. Beliau menawarkan dua jenis pemetik. T-Drop 5 dan Diamond 5. Angka 5 ialah purata ketebalan pemetik dalam Milimeter. Baru-baru ini penulis blog (juga pengguna T-Drop 5) telah berhubung dengan En. Lokman Kamal untuk mendapatkan maklumat belakang tabir bagaimana T-Drop 5 dibuat. Beliau bersetuju untuk mengongsi sedikit maklumat umum kepada saya dan anda. Sayugianya ini merempahkan sedikit entri blog ini selain dari kembara baiki.

LK Picks is a creation of Mr. Lokman Kamal in Kedah. Recently this blog writer ( a T-Drop 5 user) had been given permission to show some behind the scene of the pick making process. Currently there's two models offered. T-Drop 5 and Diamond 5. Five millimeters is general thickness. I hope this entry would invite equal or more interest than the usual repairs entry. Enclosed in this entry are several pictures. Each is pretty much self explanatory. 

Diserta dalam ini beberapa gambar (dengan kebenaran) proses pembuatan LK Pick oleh Encik Lokman Kamal selaku pembuat. Saya akan cuba menyampaikan apa yang tersurat dan tersirat pada setiap gambar.

Mula-mula contoh gaya pemetik ditekap ke kelongsong mentah. Pada bahagiannya dibuat tanda kasar sebagai rujukan gosok.

Menggunakan penggosok bermotor untuk memperincikan kelongsong mentah ke garis tekap. Proses ini memerlukan masa, kesabaran dan tumpuan. Bukti rosak boleh dilihat dalam gambar 2.4. Walaupun begitu nisbah material rosak atau tidak menepati kehendak masih rendah yang mana baik ialah 90% kepada rosak 10%. Pada mata kasar saya ia longgokan rosak itu nampak elok. Jika hendak dipos ke saya pun apa salah nya. Saya ok saja. Hehe.

Each pick blank is rough sanded to the template outline. This process requires high degree of focus and pattience. About 10% of a badge would end up in the thrash due to material flaw or high porous. In fig 2.4 are bunch of rejected picks. To my eyes they look fine. I wouldn't mind to have some of that. Hehe.

Selepas dapat bentuk yang kehendaki. Setiapnya melalui proses gosok basah disamping pembersihan dan penilaian mata. Rendaman air juga memastikan setiap T-Drop 5 dan Diamond 5 tiada retakan. Pemeriksaan jisim dilakukan dengan kuku supaya setiap Pemetik padat.

After the objective shape is achieved, each pick is clean and wet sanded. Each pick goes through density checks before passing to the next process.

Setiap pemetik digosok dengan tangan hingga berkilat dan paruh pemetik dan geometrinya diperiksa bagi memastikan paruh tidak terlalu muncung tajam, jika ya ia boleh tumpul lebih cepat dari biasa kerana tiada sokongan jisim dari kiri dan kanan bahagian pemetik.

Each pick is repeatedly hand sanded and polished to mirror shine while making its correct symmetrical dimension.

Proses terakhir ialah mengguna pantulan cahaya untuk memastikan tiada herotan cahaya pada kelicinan muka. Pada gambar ialah beberapa T-Drop 5 dan Diamond 5 sedia untuk di pos kepada pembeli.

Saya diberi tunjuk LK Pick T-Drop 5 ialah pada 2012. Jadi pada yang mengetahuinya, LK Picks bukan jenama baru.

Pada awalnya saya rasa mungkin ya atau mungkin tidak untuk menggunakannya. Namun sebagai pengguna pemetik tebal, saya wajib terbuka kepada apa-apa melampaui 3mm, manalah tahu kan. Sejurus mencuba T-Drop, ia serta-merta serasi dengan saya. Gambar bawah ialah pemetik T-Drop 5 saya dari tahun ia diguna dan masih. Jangan ragu pada saya. Saya hanya ambil rasuah bernilai tidak kurang dari 2.6 Billion. LOL!

T-Drop 5 mempunyai geometri mesra ibu jari. Ia tebal dan muncung dikawasan sepatutnya. Geometrinya seolah telah mengambil kira semua buruk sangka atau rasa.  Membanding nada letup tali dan pemetik antara Stubby 3 dan T-Drop 5. Stubby 3 menghasil Nada terang dan ringan. T-Drop 5 menghasil Nada yang seimbang dan menumbuk. Dari segi kawal guna ia tidak memenatkan. Setiap pukulan kod kuasa padu dan padat. Permainan mee memberi dengar Nada yang jitu,meletup dan bebas. Apa ke jadahnya perasaan ini, beza Stubbly 3 dan T-Drop 5 umpama Siang dan Malam. Saya hanya boleh cadangkan T-Drop 5 untuk sesiapa sedang mengguna atau mahu melampaui saiz 3mm. Jika anda pengguna 2mm dan kebawah, saya tiada jaminan anda akan suka.

Saya juga baru ingat janji manifesto 2015 saya untuk mengepos seketul dua kepada Tuan Ijau dan Tuan Sub, Maafkan saya mencapati tuan berdua, semasa entri ini ditulis dan 3 tahun kemudian, ia akan masuk sampul ke Pos Laju.

I also just remembered my promises to post one/two LK Picks to Tuan Ijau and Tuan Sub. My highest apology to you both. Three years later and at the time of writing, its on the way.

Saya diberitahu baki bahan mentah untuk pembuatan pemetik agak terhad. Kita doakan mudah-mudahan Encik Lokman Kamal berupaya mendapatkan isi semula dari sumber yang ada atau yang baru supaya boleh terus menghasilkan model T-Drop 5 dan Diamond 5.

I'm inform the raw material is becoming scarce to find. We wish Mr Lokman Kamal will find a new supplier should there be a rise in demand.

My Gibson Conspiracy Theory Part II

This is old news but I thought I throw in my opinion about the press statement made earlier this year by the most popular CEO in the guitar making business.

I'm not going to point out their guitar flaws, I mean those are now common knowledge since long ago.

So one of Henry quotes was "There are problems with the guitar retail industry"

I know many players were disgruntled by his statement but I want to peel the issue as rational as I could. So okay, Hendry spoke about bad support from dealers and all of a sudden the guitar community which are mostly consumers choose to bash Henry while being seen to side with the dealers. Well now you fucking moron. How about taking the time to see the big picture and doing some research about how business works. Then and only then you make conclusion.

First of all the guitar business is not rocket science. I came from the CEP (Consumer Electronics Product) field and I could see some similarities between these two industries. Both would have what we call organised chain distribution. You have the manufacturer selling to the distributors. The distributors then sell the products to dealers then the dealers sells to the general consumer. Sometime the distributor and dealer is the same guy so go figure. Then someone somewhere came up with the MSRP or RRP in the contract. Gee I wonder who's that fucking genius might be. Somebody tell me please. 

I want to share my two cent about this MSRP/RRP. From what I know there are only two types of it.

The Enforced MSRP - to put simply, this is what I call price fixing to corner the consumers and maintaining order amongst dealers at the same time. When I was in the CEP industry we use this system on all our dealers. The benefits for our dealers is they're able to stock up by full consignment or partial transaction. To be honest it really doesn't matter to us if our dealers made full advance payment because they're bind to our T&C, Another benefit is they don’t have to worry about rival brand MSRP, market trend,advert and forecast as we have a special team for that. All they(the dealers) have to do is sell it.  Our rules are quiet simple. If a dealer do not reach our volume sales then he's OUT. All discount or price hike of our products is determine by us. Any discount or promo by dealers must be consulted and approved by us or you're OUT. We send spies as customer in disguise to your shop to make sure you're not undercutting our other dealers behind our back. If you're caught then you're OUT. Bottom line, to us the dealers are just machai sharing the profit pie. No machai is allowed to step on another machai's foot. Sounds cruel but this is the real world. For your information our competitors are doing the same too. Hehe

The Free Market MSRP - Basically the contract only secures the exclusive rights between manufacturer and dealers. The MSRP really does means the MSRP. No price control and fix. The shop owns the products so it's entirely up to the shop if the shop wants to sell it at higher, max, half or at a loss. Market factor and consumer buying strength determines the price of things. Every man(dealer) for himself and each man decides his greed. If the circumstances is right. The sky is the limit. I can't elaborate a lot on this as I have no experience.

You see I'm beginning to think we consumers are seen to be not that bright or like water fish by many. It's time to rid ourselves off this stigma by asking these questions.

Who the fuck among us water fish is able to buy directly from Henry e.g. a Les Paul Standard and pay say at USD1000 or whatever cost price it might be? 

Answer - No water fish allowed,only the distributors/dealers.

Who the fuck is charging us water fish USD3000++ for the very same Les Paul Standard? Where do you think the X amount of money went to?

So before we dumbfuckers choose to blindly side with any shop, any Gibson bashing forum/FB or make any YouTube video about it, we should perhaps do some research.  All we dumbfucker need to do is just sniff where the urine is and bark at the right tree in other words follow the money trail.

Hmm...I wonder which MSRP system is being use in the guitar industry? I'm so wanting to know!

My Gibson conspiracy theory

 The Gibson guitars company. Yes, everyone is talking about them lately.I think there's more to it than what's publicly known but I’ll leave at that. That's the end of my theory. Yawn... Zzzzzz

I want to share something that I never told anyone before. In 1986 my buddy Hendry(not real name) asked me whether I was interested doing a guitar business together. Being a teen at the time I didn't know anything about any business but my own. I didn't have much money then but I said okay let's do it. My thought was if this thing of ours didn’t to take off, the worst that could happen is me looking for a job when I leave school. Not long after our little discussion, I broke my chicken bank, gave all of my $27.85 cent to Hendry. Few month later we bought Gisbon guitars off Nordin Corporation.

Although the company is not without its current debt, Sales picked up good with the help of magazines adds, MTV and radio hits from bands that uses our guitars. Splash(Guns'N'Robbers) was a phenomenal player filling the legacy list alongside Gary Mooer, Eric Claptern, BB Queen, ZZ Bottom, Angers Young (AC-CD),Jimmy Paige(Lets Zapplane),Peter Flampton etc. To the teens knowing “Sour cunt of yours" was a must but to play the intro on a Gisbon was an ambition. Sales were off the roof in 1988 not only here in US and Europe but also from unexpected small countries too. I remember one of our distributor near the equator. Despite their cramp size store without a proper ac showroom, no humidification system and "show me the money" attitude, they were still able to sell our guitar by the tons.

I remember we give out awards to many of our performing dealers. It’s our version of the Oscar and our way of saying thanks for supporting our company. Nothing to it really, me and Hendry chopped off 50 plus headstock from our pile of rejected necks, glued each on a rectangle cut mahogany from our rejected guitar bodies. Hired someone to engrave them and sent them out. Each year we were hiring more employees than before plus adding some machines for better efficiency but not so much to change how the guitars were originally made. Especially the “el pee” and “ass gee” models.

There’s one time in the 90’s I proposed to Hendry that we put together all of our experience luthiers to create for new department call the Custom Shop. I also suggested we published a booklet/magazine thick catalogue call "Gisbon Backline" featuring our luthiers basic info, years with the company, past guitar works for artist along with the current products line. I showed Hendry a magazine I got from one of our store call "Fendeer Frontline”. I told him the magazine gave quiet a significant sales increase of the brand. Hendry said yes to the custom shop but no to the rest. He said Gisbon guitars were never about the people behind the products, it’s about the brand and the Heritage. We regretted leaving them behind in Kalamazoom. Pun intended.

As our company expands I noticed Hendry had changed a bit. He was becoming a bit totalitarian. In 2004 he went after a small guitar company in Stephensville run by Paul Read Smithereens for pattern infringement. I didn't see any wrong done by them. I think Hendry was upset about a past high echelon employee (the late Ted MackCarthy) had shared our tone wood secrets to Paul. We loss the court case and moved on.

One time I had a meench(meeting+lunch) with our company book keeper. He told me despite our CEO high paying salary, The Master kept taking out 26 million from the company's vault. The book keeper told me he had to make up for that through loans so that our year book would look good. I told the book keeper to shut up and finish his Nasi Campur Petai Belacan. If it wasn't for some of our current automation machines he still be inhaling wood dust and paint at the production line. Master Hendry must be researching/scouting some new cutting edge machines for the company besides all big company does this I said. Gave him a raise after.

I approach Hendry and asked him to take it easy on the vault visits. We were debt free after 88. Frequent visits will not only hurt the company vault (its old, parts obsolete) but would also push us further from our future goal. "Vision 2020 – One world order, one guitar brand". Rather than nodding he instead said it’s not every year we can milk a profitable cow, just relax and take this bag of 5 million dollars. Go and have a vacation in the tropics. Have a blast. Treat yourself something fancy. There's more where this came from. I said Hendry my buddy, you’re absolutely right.

In 2011 we had a problem consigning rosewood stock for our neck production. Our lumber supplier decided to cut ties with us as we were behind on payment. We had to look for a cheaper look alike alternative but we were concern about the market reaction to the spec change. Ironically Hendry was calm about it. He said he has a good plan in motion that would put us on spotlight and would gain public support. I ask him what it was but he didn't divulge. I ask him whether it has to do with fire and insurance claim. He said no. He said he need to make a few calls to his politician buddies. Bail out was what I thought. Great idea though it's unlikely.

In 2012 the F.I.B raided our factory. They came fully armed which made us look like we're running a cocaine factory. The F.I.B confiscated what's left of our rosewood. I was beginning to doubt Hendry. Maybe he was shoving powder into our guitars. I must admit our guitars does smell funny. Friendship aside, I had to seek answers but Hendry kept assuring me not to worry. It's all staged so we could do without rose wood. It would gain a lot of publicity, uproar from the player community. He added it’ll just be temporary or permanent remedy depending how things pick up after. I was mad and stump but at the same time acknowledging this guy is a genius, this is a plucking masterpiece plan.

In 2014 Hendry brought in a new brain into the company. The person name is Kreg Anderten. Word in the net is he used to run a famous forum and had written a few good video recording technique books. Hendry wanted a modern touch in our guitars. He was so fascinated by our newly acquired German made Pleq machinen that he wanted to incorporate some of its motorised mechanics into our 2015 line up.

During our closed door meeting both I and Hendry acknowledged this Kreg person has great ideas about our company direction. To us he seems quiet in touch with the outside world. He hook us up with Tropical Tuning (a German company too).  Kreg told us that they are the leading expert of LTS(Lazy to Tune Syndrome) and they have found a cure. Kreg needed 10 guitars for the experiment cum presentation in Europe. We gave Kreg his 10 happyphone.

We flew to West Germany to see the Tropical Tuning lab where they conducted experiment on 10 monkeys. Each monkey was given a Happyphone fitted with LTS Curetronics at the headstock.  9 out 10 monkeys pushed the button. All 11 of us (9 monkeys+2 humans) went ape when we saw the LED light show with the tuning keys rotating. However monkey no 10 wasn't impress about the LTS Curetronics System. It kept saying guitar tuning was never about speed, it’s about ear training and preparation. For that they released it back to the wild. Sad to see it goes. Last I heard Ceasar (monkey no 10) was leading a tempered tuning rebel army in a jungle in a park somewhere.
